Karel Breydel, also known as Carel Breydel or „Le Chevalier“ (1678–1733), was a Flemish painter from Antwerp, renowned for his battle scenes, cavalry paintings, and landscapes. Little is known about his life, with most details derived from the writings of Jean-Baptiste Descamps, whose accounts are considered partly unreliable. Breydel trained under Pieter Rijsbraeck and Peter Ykens in Antwerp. Initially planning to visit Italy, he joined his successful brother Frans in Kassel instead. In 1704, Breydel became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. His energetic, inventive battle scenes resemble the style of Adam Frans van der Meulen, and his Rhine landscapes echo Griffier. Several European museums feature Breydel’s works in their collections.
