SALVATOR, Ludwig – Paxos und Antipaxos im Ionischen Meer. Würzburg & Wien, 1889. 4vo [284 x 230 mm]. Half linen binding. XV (1) 480 pp. With 98 full-page illustrations and 123 woodcut illustrations in the text.

Austrian Archduke Ludwig Salvator was an avid researcher of the islands in the Mediterranean Sea. When he was just 20 years old, he decided to begin sailing around the world, later focusing on the Mediterranean area, the Balearic Islands, with a particular interest in Mallorca, where he also settled. His interests were focused mainly on preserving the landscapes and wildlife, as well as on writing detailed accounts on the geography, history, flora and fauna of the places he explored.

Between 1884 and 1885, Salvator explored the Paxos and Antipaxos island, two small islands in the Ionian Sea, near to the more famous Korfu island. His travel accounts were later published in the present book. The first part of the book deals with the history and geography of the islands, as well as its inhabitants and their administration. The second part is dedicated to describing the scenic landscapes and the coasts and beaches of the two islands. The final part deals with the population of the islands and their habits, customs and way of living: „His book is especially interesting for its illustrations of individuals, houses, and scenes from everyday life in these islands“ (Blackmer). This captivating description of the two islands, accompanied by numerous illustrations remains one of the best accounts of life in the area, which stems from the dedication of a skillful researcher and adventurer.
