GILLRAY, JamesFrench Invasion _ or _ Buonaparte Landing in Great Britain. London, Hannah Humphrey, 10 June 1803.

Plate: 290 x 690; Sheet: 299 x 740 mm; Hand-coloured etching; skillfully closed tears

A very rare panoramic plate by Gillray. This was the first of a popular stream of caricatures that dominated the rest of the year, in a bid to encourage volunteers and generally elevate patriotism in the face of this projected threat of invasion. The French army in complete disarray on an English beach, with Napoleon on a white horse in the centre, fleeing in the face of a British cannonade.
