FIRST EDITION. One of only 200 copies.
Beautifully bound in contemporary french crimson morocco, ornamental border on both covers, inside dentelles, all edges gilt, moire covered pastedowns — probably the original publishers binding.
The exceedingly rare first edition of Delille’s most celebrated and influential poem, in which the author celebrated the virtues of the natural garden or jardin anglais, rather than the fashion for neoclassical symmetry. A luxury edition on paper by Matthieu Johannot d’Annonay and with characters by Francois Ambroise Didot and Claude Garamond. All later editions were published in octavo.
