SAUVAGE, Arsene Symphorien; CAMPE, Joachim Heinrich; Daniel Defoe – „Nuevo Robinson“, ca. 1880

Unique and splendid collection of 33 unpublished drawings for Campe’s adaption of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe.

Size of drawings: c.17, 2 x 10, 4 cm. / Size of cardboard sheets: c. 31 x 23, 5 cm. – The drawings are mounted on cardboard sheets with dust jackets. The dust jacket of the first drawing has handwritten printing instructions. The collection incorporates a drawing for the cover (Robinson’s Lama) as well as 32 drawings for the book itself. The very nice drawings impress with their naturalism, and their very fine execution. According to the handwritten title on the slipcase, they were intended for a Spanish edition of Campe’s Robinson. We were not able to locate a printed copy of the book and it can be assumed, that the project was never realized. That’s a shame, because the drawings are extraordinarily beautiful depictions of the Robinson theme. — Arsène Symphorien Sauvage was born in Rosières-devant-Bar (Naives-Rosieres) in the French departement Meuse. He was the pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). Sauvage participated in the Salon of 1868. He was a specialist in still lifes and hunting trophies, but he also painted naturalistic portraits in the style of Arcimboldo. He also illustrated some Spanish reading books (e.g. by Carlos Carrillo and Luis Mantilla).

The linen-slipcase is some worn and rubbed, the drawings are in very good condition.

Die Zeichnungen sind auf Kartonbögen mit Schutzumschlägen montiert. Der Schutzumschlag der ersten Zeichnung enthält handschriftliche Anweisungen für den Druck. — Die Sammlung besteht aus einer Zeichnung für den Einband (Robinsons Lama) sowie 32 Zeichnungen für das Buch selbst. Die sehr schönen Zeichnungen bestechen durch ihren Naturalismus und ihre sehr feine Ausführung. Laut handschriftlichem Titel auf der Mappe wurden die Zeichnungen für eine spanische Ausgabe von Campes Robinson angefertigt. Wir konnten jedoch kein Exemplar des Buches auftreiben und es ist anzunehmen, dass das Projekt nie realisiert wurde. Das ist schade, denn die Zeichnungen sind außerordentlich schöne Darstellungen des Robinson-Themas. — Arsène Symphorien Sauvage wurde in Rosières-devant-Bar (Naives-Rosieres) im französischen Departement Meuse geboren.
