GILLRAY, James (after)The Nursery; – with Britannia reposing in peace. (Weimar, Industrie-Comptoir, 1803)

Plate: 175 x 231mm; Sheet: 191 x 258mm; hand-coloured etching; old folds

Fox, Addington and Hawkesbury mothering a fat, childlike Britannia who sleeps in a large cradle with her thumb in her mouth. On a small broadside on the wall Napoleon is playing a fiddle. This caricatue deals with the appeasing attitude of the British ministers towards Napoleon. This is a reduced German version of Gillray’s caricature published 1802 in London.
